LA Story. Photographer Taryn Kent shows off LA’s art.

Hey hey. I thought it might be fun to explore one of my favorite cities with a girl who knows it well. Taryn Kent is a photographer who splits her time between San Diego and LA, capturing really rad images for fashion brands. I see her work everywhere from billboards in Brooklyn to every cool blog on the web. She works for super stylish labels like Gunn & Swain, Wyeth Eyewear, and Cleobella. I wanted her to show me around LA pointing out places she likes and things that inspire her. I also wanted to hear more of her story, because like most people, her path to her current dynomite career was not a straight one!

taryn kent los angeles LATaryn look me to Abbot Kinney boulevard which is a street of fashion, art, and food near Venice beach. There were so many beautiful murals to look at. Honestly I love street art so much. It seems like people feel liberated to be super creative maybe because they know it’s temporary?

We spotted this total entrepreneur just making it happen out of his VW van. He had absolutely gorgeous flowers coming out of all sides of this thing and was putting together works of floral art on the spot.

Taryn wanted to show me the Parachute store. Their decor is so killer right? Parachute just nails the luxe linen vibe. Their showroom is set to look like a beautiful loft and all their product is out to touch and appreciate without stacks of it everywhere.

I told you Taryn didn’t just land in her dream job right out of the gate. Out of college she worked in the boardsport industry for Transworld as a production coordinator, and then DC shoes as a materials/color specialist. But photography was always with her. She was the person with a camera in her hand everywhere she went. She dreamed of being a photographer professionally but it felt like a risk to go for it. Many of us can relate to that feeling, am I right? She started to shoot weddings on the side and family portraits. Once she got enough business she was able to start up a photography business called Joielala with another photographer. Together the two ladies built a thriving wedding and portrait photography business, getting Taryn tons of exposure and experience. After years of killing it at Joielala she felt the entrepreneurial pull to truly be on her own, setting her own schedule and working with the brands she loves, which is where Taryn is today.

I love hearing stories like this because so often I hear that people initially think they won’t be able to make a living as an artist, so they follow a different career path for a while. But eventually they think- what the hell am I doing? Why not atleast try to do what I love and am actually good at?? And it WORKS.

Now don’t you want to see some images from Taryn herself?! Yes. Here is a little diary through her lens:

This shot was such a stunner that the restaurant used it on their own social media! Because yeah, when a professional photographer snaps shots for Instagram you get free photography! Score.
